Rex, King of Carnival

History

Founded in 1872 to honor a visiting Russian grand duke, Rex created much of modern Carnival ceremony, including the official colors and their meanings (purple = justice, green = faith, gold = power).

• Rex doubloon (the doubloon tradition began with Rex in 1960)

Where to watch

The classic Carnival corridor. The vast majority of major parades roll here - up Napoleon Avenue, along St. Charles Avenue, and down to Canal Street.
